How We Keep Everyone Safe

Much to our sadness, tragedies nationwide
have signaled to us the need to review our strategies for emergencies
and create plans.
Scroll past the picture to see our EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
We want our parents to know we make every effort, and have implemented the following steps:

1) We have security cameras that allow us to see various places throughout the school, as well as the entrances to our school.
These cameras keep digitally taped records of events for investigation purposes as well.
2) All doors are doors locked.
3) Visitors and parents ring the doorbell to be "buzzed" into the school.
4) All visitors are required to check in at the office, the Sewall Program, or ECE.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

FIRE DRILL

SIGNAL:
Short blasts on the air horn, lights flashing at the alarm stations.
ACTION: Students evacuate to the playground, teachers bring their class roster and a red/green card to show "all present". The card green side is held up to the school if all are present and accounted for. Teachers hold red side to the school if someone is missing or there is a need for assistance.

REFUGE IN PLACE

(formerly known as “Duck and Cover”).
SIGNAL: Very short blasts on the air horn, which tells you that you have a very short time to get to safety.
ACTION: Students should quickly move into a position under their desks, on their knees, hands interlaced over the base of the neck. Call the office for students who are not in your classroom.

REFUGE

SIGNAL: Long blasts on the air horn signaling that you have a longer time to get to safety.
ACTION: Students move to the first floor refuge area as far away from windows as possible. A place is designated for each class. Students should move into a duck and cover position (on knees, hands over base of the neck). Students should maintain silence in order to hear next steps or directions.

LOCK DOWN

SIGNAL: Long blasts on the air horn alternated with an announcement
“TEACHERS PLEASE SECURE YOUR ROOMS."

ACTION:
  • 1. Teachers will invite sweep any nearby parents or students into their room, close and lock their doors.
Teachers will call the classroom of visiting students to notify that homeroom teacher that they are safe.
  • 2. If students are in a Specials class (Art, Music, PE, LMC), the specials teachers will remain with them. Students in Special Education will also remain with those teachers for the duration of the emergency.
  • 3. Facility managers check the doors to the playground.
  • 4. Teachers without students remain in their rooms, and call the office in the event that we need thier help.
Signal: “STUDENTS QUIET AND OUT OF SIGHT.”
Action: The announcement students away from eyesight of doors and windows. Remain until further notice.
    Teaching ceases.
The announcement will provide other information in the event that it can be expressed without making students fearful. We will call classrooms if the situation is not information we want announced.

Signal: “THIS IS A MODIFIED LOCK DOWN.”
Action:Activities in the classroom resume, but all students remain there in their locked classroom. They do not leave the classroom unless directed by staff in the office (the Principal, the Asst. Principal orthe Administrator in Charge).
    5. Signs are placed on the doors telling community members that we are secured and that we are legally required keep the doors closed. All people who are inside remain inside and all those that are outside remain outside. The main front door will have a sign, as will the exit near 104’s door and the west exit near room 111’s door.
    6. The office will announce when the LOCK DOWN situation is over. NOTE:

If an EVACUATION OF THE SCHOOL is necessary, Infinite Campus will auto-call parents using the number provided by parents. This is why it is so important to keep numbers updated.
If we are in this sort of situation, the district will take over our evacuation and direct us, or provide busses for evacuation. Our nearest place to evacuate to is KUNSMILLER MIDDLE SCHOOL. Address: 2250 S. Quitman (Quitman and Perry). Phone number is 720-4224-0200. It will also be announced through a bulletin ribbon on television.
